FPV Drone Versions — What PNP, BNF, RTF, ELRS, TBS and WTFPV Mean

When this applies

You're looking at a pre-built FPV drone on our store and the version options (PNP, ELRS, TBS, BNF, RTF, WTFPV) don't make sense. Choosing the wrong one means the drone won't bind to your radio, won't send video to your goggles, or arrives without parts you expected.

Symptoms / question

  • "What's the difference between the ELRS and TBS versions of this drone?"
  • "I bought the PNP version. Why won't it bind to my radio?"
  • "Does WTFPV mean the receiver is missing too?"
  • "The listing says RTF. Do I really not need anything else?"

Answer / solution

These labels describe three separate things, and they are not interchangeable:

  • PNP, BNF, RTF: how complete the package is
  • ELRS, TBS, DJI: which radio-control receiver is fitted
  • WTFPV: what is missing from the FPV video system

A drone can be, for example, "ELRS WTFPV": an ELRS receiver fitted, but no FPV camera or video transmitter.

Quick reference

  • PNP (Plug-and-Play): the drone is assembled but normally has no separate radio receiver. You install a receiver that matches your radio. Radio, goggles, battery and charger are not included.
  • BNF (Bind-and-Fly): a compatible receiver (or DJI control path) is installed, but no radio is included. You supply and bind the matching transmitter, and normally still need goggles, battery and charger.  Can also be called DJI/SBUS aswell.
  • RTF (Ready-to-Fly): a kit with matched drone, radio controller and goggles. Batteries still need charging and the kit needs inspecting before flight.
  • ELRS (ExpressLRS): an ELRS receiver is installed. You need an ELRS radio or ELRS transmitter module on the same frequency band (usually 2.4GHz).
  • TBS (Team BlackSheep): normally means a TBS Crossfire receiver is installed. You need a Crossfire-capable radio (e.g. TBS Tango 2) or a Crossfire transmitter module.
  • WTFPV (Without FPV): the FPV camera and video transmitter are not installed, and the video antenna is normally absent too. You install the specified video system (commonly a DJI O3/O4 Air Unit). Says nothing about the receiver.

The details that catch people out

  1. PNP does not always mean "no control possible." If a compatible DJI Air Unit is fitted and wired for SBUS, some PNP drones can be flown with the supported DJI FPV Remote Controller. Read the receiver, Air Unit and compatibility details together. (source: product listings)
  2. ELRS versions must match on band and firmware. Transmitter and receiver must use the same frequency band: 2.4GHz and 868/900MHz equipment do not bind to each other. The first number of the firmware version must also match (3.x with 3.x). A shared binding phrase is the simplest way to bind.   3. TBS and ELRS do not mix. An ELRS radio cannot bind to a Crossfire receiver. If you already own ELRS equipment, the TBS version adds cost, not capability.   4. WTFPV only describes the video system. The same WTFPV drone can still be offered as PNP, ELRS or TBS. That's the receiver choice, which is separate.   5. RTF is a package category, not a promise. A genuine FPV RTF kit includes drone, controller and goggles.   6. Even RTF needs preparation. Batteries need charging, and any removable antenna must be fitted before the video transmitter is powered. Don't update firmware on one side of a pre-bound ELRS kit, because mismatched major versions break the bind. The box-contents list outranks the letters in the title.

Two more abbreviations: RX is the radio-control receiver (talks to your radio). VTX is the video transmitter (sends the camera picture to your goggles). Different jobs, different compatibility checks.

How to check a listing before you buy

  1. Receiver: Does it say ELRS 2.4GHz, Crossfire/TBS, DJI/SBUS, or no RX?
  2. Radio: Does your transmitter use that exact protocol and frequency band?
  3. Video: Is it analogue, DJI, Walksnail or HDZero, and do your goggles support it?
  4. WTFPV: If shown, are the camera, VTX and antenna absent, and which Air Unit fits?
  5. Box contents: Are the battery, charger, radio and goggles actually listed?

Common pitfalls

  • Assuming WTFPV means PNP. WTFPV is about video; PNP is about the receiver. A WTFPV drone can have an ELRS receiver fitted. Check both fields.
  • Buying TBS when you own ELRS. They cannot bind to each other. Match the receiver to the radio you already have.
  • Treating "O4-ready" as "O4 included." "Ready" describes compatibility. Unless the box contents list the Air Unit, budget for it and the installation.
  • Updating one side of an RTF kit. Updating only the radio or only the receiver to a different major ExpressLRS version breaks the bind. Keep both on compatible major versions.
